In seeking a drug-free solution to relief from muscular pain, H’n’H have sourced an Australian-developed TENS (Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulator) device that applies small electrical impulses to the required area of the body, through conductive pads. The device itself is about the size of a matchbox. As a result it can be used, discreetly, throughout the day.
These TENS devices provide pain relief in two ways:
- Sending high frequency messages to the brain that ‘block’ pain messages (known as ‘gating’). Pain relief is evident after a short application of the TENS device but is short-lived after the device is turned off;
- Sending low frequency messages to the brain causing it to induce endorphins – the body’s own natural pain-relieving hormones. The TENS device may have to be applied for up to 40 minutes before endorphin release occurs, but pain relief can last for 8-36 hours after the device has been turned off.

Various models are available including those designed specifically for;
- General pain management;
- Management of strong, chronic pain and arthritis;
- Management of sporting injuries and rehabilitation;
- Management of chronic back pain;
- Improved bladder control.

TENS devioces are designed to use either replaceable batteries or a fixed, rechargeable, battery. Various types of conductive pads can also be purchased, to suit the muscular injury and area you wish to treat.
Depending on the private health fund you are with you may be able to claim some of the cost of the device back from your fund.
